WHO WE ARE
Sameena Choudry is the Founder of Equitable Education. Her whole career in education has been devoted to closing the gaps for different groups of pupils due to her passionate belief in the power of education to transform not only the lives of children and young people but whole communities too.
Sameena has a proven track record of making a significant difference to outcomes for pupils through the various roles she has had during her 26 year career. She has been privileged to have had the opportunity to work successfully in a range of roles within education. These have ranged from starting her career initially as a teacher then working as a Lecturer. She has worked as a PGCE course tutor at Sheffield Hallam University and regularly provided training for BEd and PGCE students at The University of Sheffield. Whilst working as a Senior Leader in schools in Sheffield, she also undertook work for the then NEAB and London University exam boards by working as an Examiner for both GCSE and A’Level’s. Sameena has considerable experience of working as a cross-phase Teacher Adviser in Sheffield, progressing to Head of Service in North Lincolnshire and for the past three years she has worked as a Senior Adviser for Closing the Gaps in England’s second largest Local Authority. She has also been a member on the NQT Appeals Panel on behalf of the DfE and an Advisory member to a number of national organisations including CILT.
Sameena has been a successful Head of Service in three Local Authorities. During these roles she has worked with many Heads, Senior Leaders and colleagues across early years, primary and secondary schools by providing support, challenge and advice. She has considerable experience of working extensively with senior colleagues within Local Authorities, mainly within school improvement but also with other services to provide strategic support for closing the gaps and delivering CPD to schools and colleagues within the LA.
Sameena has been able to impact significantly on improvements at both LA level and school level for many pupils through the senior roles she has held. In her most recent senior leadership post as Strategic Lead for Closing the Gaps, performance for many different groups of pupils rose faster than the national average for their peers consistently over a period of three years, with outcomes improving across the board from Foundation Stage, KS2 and GCSE. The evidence of the impact she has had on individual schools has been regularly acknowledged in Ofsted reports. She brings this wealth of expertise and evidence of impact to her new role as Founder of Equitable Education.
Sameena has a BA (Hons) from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London). She gained her PGCE from Didsbury School of Education in Manchester and then completed a part-time MA in Applied Linguistics at Sheffield University whilst teaching full time in Sheffield. She has been an accredited Ofsted Inspector since 2003. She has written articles and published works in her specialist field and is currently writing a book showcasing examples of best practice in closing the gaps for different groups of pupils within the current educational landscape. She is on the editorial board of the highly respected journal Race Equality Teaching. She is particularly interested in system leadership and school to school collaboration and how the opportunities of this way of working can be used as a powerful lever to close the gaps for more children and young people. More recently Sameena has co-founded #WomenEd with four other colleagues www.womened.org and she regularly takes part in national grassroots conferences. Examples of conferences Sameena has taken part in this year consist of #WomenEd, #NorthernRocks, #BeyondLevels and the #NUT Teachers conference.
